IRCHESTER UTD 2

Irchester manager Darren Young enjoyed a winning return to Jubilee Park as the Romans defeated his old club with two early goals.

The visitors took the lead after just four minutes when Paul Caswell chased down Josh Crick's headed back pass and won a tussle with Town keeper Dave Beeny to slot into an empty net.

Irchester went close when Jason Vaughan's flick played in Mike Houghton to shoot wide, and they doubled the lead after fourteen minutes. Carl Mackney's clearance was flicked on by Caswell for Nicki Young to apply a confident finish.

When Huntingdon replied Ryan Spencer headed wide at the far post from a Joe Furness corner while a flag kick from the other side by Gary Marheineke drifted across the box with no home player able to find the vital touch needed.

Young was close to adding a third for Irchester after combining with Houghton while at the other end Furness latched onto a booming clearance but was thwarted by alert goalkeeping from Mackney.

Two interval changes sparked Huntingdon into life and Furness found Mackney well positioned to save his volley before the keeper raced off his line to thwart James Edwards.

Mark Hackett was narrowly too high with a free kick from distance for the Romans while a home chance went begging as Edwards, clean through, was thwarted by the keeper's legs.

Clever footwork from Young created a chance but his 25 yard shot was off target while for Huntingdon Dwayne Rankin cut in from the left to try his luck with a chip which Mackney collected safely.
