For the second time this week, Huntingdon were without a number of key players for the visit of local rivals St Neots Town. The squad was eager to build on the recent back to back victories with another three points this evening to continue the pressure on Deeping Rangers & Stotfold at the top of the table.
Manager Mark Furness was looking for a positive start, and his players did not disappoint as they pressed the visitors in the early exchanges and broke the deadlock as early as the fifth minute when a long throw from Medwynter was headed on for Craig “Chiller” Hill to tap in at the far post, 1-0.
St Neots struggled to contend with the strong swirling wind, and Huntingdon extended their lead on twenty minutes when Matty Cox floated a free kick on the right that Mark Cox clinically thumped in, 2-0. Huntingdon were now rampant, and ten minutes later, used the strong wind to their advantage when Matty Cox smashed a third goal from thirty yards over the keepers head, 3-0.
Huntingdon endeavoured to pass the ball, and were rewarded with a fourth a few minutes before half time when a neat passing phase was concluded when Pinner lobbed the keeper from the edge of the area, 4-0.
Second Half
Huntingdon had essentially dominated the first period, but the visitors now had the advantage of the strong wind and reduced the deficit after only a couple of minutes when a speculative cross was headed in as Flitcroft advanced, 4-1.
Ben Spackman replaced Jake Pinner after 55 minutes.
St Neots were now moving the ball with confidence, and secured a valuable second goal on the hour when the referee overruled the linesman”s flag as they broke through the midfield, 4-2.
The next goal would prove crucial. Thankfully, it was a sublime piece of play after seventy minutes from Chiller that wrapped the three points for the championship seeking home team. After good approach play by Spackman, Chiller cut inside and unleashed a wonderful drive into the corner of the net, 5-2.
Olly Butler replaced Welford with ten minutes remaining.
Perhaps not the most fluent performance of the season, but a crucial victory to maintain the momentum of three league victories and reiterate that Huntingdon Town are now back on track for the title.
