STOTFOLD 1

A rain swept Jubillee Park welcomed the teams for this eagerly awaited top of the table clash. Although unbeaten, Stotfold had dropt points with two draws before this evenings encounter, whereas the only points conceded by the home team, were the three at Stotfold before Christmas.

The opening exchanges were as brisk as the chill wind that cut across the pitch. Brockett had a shot well saved by the Stotfold keeper after being released by Furness, while Flitcroft watched as a chip went agonisingly past the post at the other end. However, it was the home side that took an early lead after eight minutes when Furness collected the ball on the edge of the area, and drove a right foot shot high into the back of the net, 1-0.

Huntingdon pressed to add a second goal. Brockett flashed a shot wide after good work between Furness and Woodward, while the keeper denied Isaac when put through. The Stotfold defence managed to deny Isaac again when they blocked a shot after good play by Olly Medwynter and Balkwill. Both sides endeavoured to secure midfield superiority, but clear cut chances were at a premium as the first period came to an end with the rain sweeping across the park.

Second Half

With the rain now abating, Huntingdon started the second period in positive fashion, as the impressive Furness found Isaacs with a telling through ball, which the keeper blocked.

After five minutes, and with little threat to the Huntingdon goal, an unnecessary free kick was conceded on the corner of the penalty area. With pace, the resultant shot flew above Flitcroft to level the scores, 1-1. Despite this disappointment, the boys looked to reassert themselves as Pinner replaced Woodward on the hour, with Medwynter moving to right midfield.

A lengthy period of possession and succession of corners penned Stotfold back. Furness had a tremendous shot blocked and Brockett blasted over from six yards as the away team defended stoutly as the reds swept forward. With less than ten minutes remaining, manager Mark Furness replaced Brockett with Butler. Stotfold were unable to release any real attacking threat, as the Huntingdon defence snuffed out any venture towards the home goal.

With five minutes remaining, the well deserved breakthrough finally came. Medwynter foraged forwards from the half way line to the edge of the area before unleashing a drive that struck the foot of the post. First to react was Matty Cox who shot into a empty net 2-1.

With the game deep into injury-time, and Stotfold looking to through caution to the wind, gaps at the back were exploited when a poor clearance was intercepted onto the advancing Isaac who rounded the keeper to score a deserved goal, 3-1. A Stotfold player was sent off for indiscipline before the restart.

Huntingdon can take enormous heart from this performance as they lead the table by one point, with a game in hand. April will be a tough month as the boys prepare for six more league matches, a Hunts Cup Final and a Ridgeons Cup 2nd cup-tie. Wow !!
