Huntingdon’s latest Cup adventure took them into the Fen’s to meet March Town United.
Encouraged by last weeks last gasp victory over Stotfold in the FA Youth Cup, the focus was now on progressing in the Ridgeons Cup.
Early exchanges were confined to the middle of the pitch until Joe Furness engineered a series of excellent crosses to undo the hard working March defence ......
After ten minutes, Furness delivered to the far post where Matt Cox rose to head in, 1 – 0.
Five minutes later, a pin point free kick from Furness was smashed in, again by Cox, 2 – 0.
The cultured left winger replicated his earlier free kick with Charlie Bowen heading in, 3 – 0.
Furness nearly added a fourth when good work from Barrett Steward resulted in a powerful header being cleared off the line !
However, a rare lapse in concentration enabled March to pull a goal back after 35 minutes, direct from a corner, 3 – 1. Stung by conceding such a bizarre goal, Huntingdon immediately looked to create fresh goal scoring opportunities, with Furness denied by an excellent save and Bowen’s header crashing against a post. A fourth goal was not to be denied, as Furness unselfishly fed Simon Isaacs to blast in three minutes before half time, 4 – 1.
Second Half
The only change saw Alex Clipsham replace Jake Pinner at right back. The red strip of Huntingdon laid siege to the March goal, and the inevitable flood of goals came on the hour when Isaacs laid back for Steward to finish neatly inside the box, 5 – 1.
The lead was extended a couple of minutes later when a long throw from Steward was headed on by Matty Cox for Furness to despatch into the net, 6 – 1.
On sixty-five minutes, Furness returned to the role of provider, as his whipped corner was headed in by Mark Cox, 7 – 1. Cue Nathan Woodward to make way for Ashley Welford.
Goal number eight came on seventy minutes from the penalty spot, with Matt Cox grabbing a well deserved hat-trick, 8 – 1. March were reduced to ten men for dissent.
Disappointingly, and very much against the run of play, March were gifted a second goal after 75 minutes, 8 – 2. Ben Spackman replaced Barrett Steward for the final quarter of an hour.
Huntingdon’s goal scoring exploits were concluded in the 80th minute when Furness capped a fine display with a confident finish, breaking through the defence, lobbing over the advancing keeper and slotting the ball in the back of the net, 9 – 2.
A comprehensive win as Huntingdon “march” into the next round !
